How to use the Wedding Budget Calculator UK
Enter the maximum budget, guest count and catering cost per guest. Add each planned fixed cost and a contingency percentage. Enter zero when a listed category does not apply. The calculator compares the estimated total with your budget and shows an estimated cost per guest.
How the wedding total is calculated
| Result | Calculation |
|---|---|
| Catering total | Guests × catering cost per guest |
| Planned subtotal | Catering + all fixed categories |
| Contingency | Planned subtotal × contingency percentage |
| Estimated total | Planned subtotal + contingency |
| Budget difference | Total budget − estimated total |
Start with an affordable total
Set the overall limit using money that is realistically available after essential living costs and existing commitments. MoneyHelper’s wedding budget guidance recommends considering income, regular spending, debts, savings and other financial obligations before setting the amount.
Guest numbers affect several costs
Catering is calculated per guest here, but venues, furniture, stationery, transport and accommodation can also change with attendance. Update the guest count whenever the list changes and request revised supplier quotes.
Why add contingency?
A contingency is an amount reserved for price changes or missed items. This calculator applies it to the planned subtotal. It does not mean the money must be spent; it helps show whether the plan still fits if costs rise.

Frequently asked questions
Does the calculator use an average UK wedding cost?
No. It calculates only from the budget and category amounts you enter.
How is catering calculated?
The entered catering and drinks amount is multiplied by the number of guests.
What should I enter for an unused category?
Enter zero so the calculator knows the field was reviewed and should add nothing.
Is contingency included in the cost per guest?
Yes. The estimated cost per guest uses the total after contingency.
Does the calculator track deposits already paid?
No. It estimates the full planned cost. Track paid amounts and remaining balances separately.
