Official fee rules used

The calculator uses official fee schedules in force on 3 October 2026. England and Wales charge £526 where the estate value is over £5,000 and no application fee at £5,000 or below. The GOV.UK probate fee guidance also lists £2 for each extra copy ordered with the application.

Jurisdiction Estate band Main fee Copy or certificate assumption
England and Wales £5,000 or less / over £5,000 £0 / £526 £2 each with application
Scotland Up to £50,000 / £50,000.01–£250,000 / over £250,000 £0 / £351 / £705 £10 per certificate ordered with inventory
Northern Ireland £10,000 or less / over £10,000 £0 / £326 £17 per certified or sealed copy
Northern Ireland personal applications: The calculator adds the official £81 personal-application fee when the estate exceeds £10,000. Scotland calls the probate process “confirmation”.

What probate fees include

The official application fee is only one part of estate administration. A person may also pay for certified copies, property or share valuations, legal help, tracing assets, clearance work and property sales. This tool includes only the extra amounts you type, so it does not invent a solicitor percentage or assume every estate needs the same services.

Estate value and court thresholds

Enter the estate value used by the relevant probate or confirmation application. Rules differ across the UK, and the value used for court fees is not automatically the same as the final amount distributed to beneficiaries. Debts, exemptions and tax calculations can require separate treatment.

Worked examples

For an England and Wales estate valued at £250,000, the main application fee is £526. Three extra copies ordered with the application add £6. If £1,800 of professional fees, £600 of valuation costs and £250 of other costs are entered, the estimated total is £3,182.

For a personal Northern Ireland application above £10,000, the calculator combines the £326 grant fee and £81 personal-application fee before adding certified copies and any costs entered by the user.

Frequently asked questions

Is probate free for a small estate?

The main fee can be zero below the relevant threshold, but other organisations may still require documents and extra administration costs can arise.

Does the calculator include Inheritance Tax?

No. It estimates court fees and costs entered by the user. Inheritance Tax is a separate calculation.

Why are Scotland’s fees different?

Scotland uses its own confirmation process and Sheriff Court fee bands rather than the England and Wales probate fee.

What is the Northern Ireland personal-application fee?

For an estate over £10,000, the calculator adds £81 when a person applies without a professional applicant, based on the 1 April 2026 schedule.

Are solicitor fees fixed?

No. They can depend on the firm, complexity and services required, so this calculator asks you to enter a quoted or expected amount.
