Convert baking ingredients, oven temperatures, recipe quantities and round cake-tin sizes for UK and international recipes.
Choose a baking calculation
Ingredient cup conversions use an approximate weight specific to the selected ingredient.
How to use this baking calculator
- Select ingredient, oven, recipe or cake-tin mode.
- Enter the values from your recipe.
- Choose the relevant units, then press Calculate.
- Check the working as well as the rounded result.
Accuracy note: cups and spoons measure volume, while grams measure weight. Flour can compact and ingredient densities vary by brand, moisture and measuring technique. For repeatable baking, weigh ingredients in grams where possible.
Common ingredient conversions
| Ingredient | Approximate grams per US cup |
|---|---|
| Plain flour | 125 g |
| Caster sugar | 200 g |
| Brown sugar, packed | 220 g |
| Butter | 227 g |
| Rolled oats | 100 g |
| Cocoa powder | 85 g |
| Honey | 340 g |
Oven temperature conversion
The oven mode converts conventional Celsius, fan Celsius, Fahrenheit and UK gas mark. The mathematical conversion is °F = °C × 9 ÷ 5 + 32. A fan setting is commonly about 20°C lower than the conventional setting, but always follow the appliance instructions because ovens differ.
| Conventional | Fan | Fahrenheit | Gas mark |
|---|---|---|---|
| 160°C | 140°C | 320°F | 3 |
| 180°C | 160°C | 356°F | 4 |
| 190°C | 170°C | 374°F | 5 |
| 200°C | 180°C | 392°F | 6 |
| 220°C | 200°C | 428°F | 7 |
Scaling a recipe
The scaling factor is required servings ÷ original servings. A recipe for 8 people scaled to 12 uses a factor of 1.5, so 250 g becomes 375 g. Baking powder, yeast, salt, cooking time and oven capacity may not scale perfectly in very large batches, so use judgement after calculating.
Changing a round cake-tin size
For tins of similar depth and shape, the ingredient multiplier is based on surface area: new diameter² ÷ original diameter². Moving from a 20 cm round tin to a 23 cm round tin gives a multiplier of about 1.3225. Tin depth, batter type and baking time can still affect the result.

Frequently asked questions
How many grams are in one cup of flour?
One US cup of plain flour is approximately 125 g in this calculator. The actual weight varies with the flour and how tightly it is packed.
Is a US cup the same as a UK cup?
No. A US customary cup is about 237 ml and is commonly rounded to 240 ml in recipes. An older imperial UK cup is about 284 ml, so check which cup the recipe means.
What is 180°C in a fan oven and gas mark?
180°C conventional is commonly treated as 160°C fan, about 356°F and gas mark 4.
How do I double or halve a baking recipe?
Set the required servings to twice or half the original servings. The calculator applies the resulting scaling factor to the ingredient amount.
How do I adapt a recipe for a different cake tin?
For round tins of similar depth, multiply ingredient quantities by new diameter squared divided by original diameter squared. Baking time may still need adjustment.
