What is the United Kingdom Currency Calculator?
The United Kingdom Currency Calculator converts an amount between pound sterling and other commonly used currencies. GBP is selected by default, but you can also convert between two non-GBP currencies. The result shows the reference-rate value, an optional estimated fee or margin, the amount remaining after that deduction, and the inverse rate.
This is designed for travel planning, overseas shopping, international salary comparisons and checking a transfer quote. It does not send money, lock a rate or predict future currency movements.
How to use the currency calculator
- Enter the amount you want to convert.
- Select the starting and destination currencies.
- Leave the custom rate blank to request the latest available reference rate, or enter the exact rate offered by your provider.
- Optionally enter a percentage fee or margin.
- Select Convert Currency.
The Swap Currencies button reverses the pair. When swapped, any custom rate is cleared so that an old directional rate is not accidentally reused.
Formula used
Estimated amount received = Converted amount − percentage fee
For example, if £100 is converted at a GBP-to-EUR rate of 1.17, the reference-rate result is €117.00. With a 2% fee or margin, the estimated deduction is €2.34 and the estimated amount received is €114.66.
Reference rate versus the rate you actually receive
A reference exchange rate is useful for comparison, but banks, card networks, bureaux de change and transfer services may apply their own rate, spread, commission or fixed fee. Weekend transactions may also be processed using a later rate. The calculator’s percentage adjustment is a simple estimate and does not model fixed charges or tiered pricing.
If you have a provider quote, enter its exact directional rate in the custom-rate field. This is usually the best way to compare what you will receive. Always confirm the final amount and all fees with the provider before a transaction.

Rate source and timing
When the custom-rate field is blank, the calculator requests the latest available daily reference rate through the Frankfurter API. Frankfurter aggregates rates from central banks and official sources. These are reference or mid-market style data rather than guaranteed retail quotes and are not intended for live trading.
