Earnings, childcare and savings
If your household has an eligible child or limited capability for work, a work allowance may apply before the 55% earnings taper. The 2026/27 allowance is £427 when a housing amount is included and £710 without one. Eligible childcare support is 85% of registered costs, capped at £1,071.09 for one child or £1,836.16 for two or more.
Savings above £6,000 create a monthly deduction of £4.35 for each £250, or part of £250. Capital above £16,000 normally prevents entitlement. This simplified estimate does not calculate the benefit cap, Minimum Income Floor, transitional protection, sanctions, non-dependant deductions or every special rule.
