Travel Distance Calculator

Travel Distance Calculator

Calculate the straight-line distance between two latitude and longitude coordinates in miles and kilometres.

e.g. London latitude

e.g. London longitude

e.g. Manchester latitude

e.g. Manchester longitude

e.g. estimated overall average speed

e.g. add 20% for a rough road-distance estimate

How the travel distance calculation works

This calculator uses the Haversine formula to estimate the shortest distance across the Earth’s surface between two coordinate pairs. It then converts the result between kilometres and miles. The optional percentage adjustment produces a rough route-distance estimate, while average speed gives a simple travel-time estimate.

Result Meaning
Straight-line distance The shortest surface distance between the two coordinates
Adjusted route estimate Straight-line distance increased by your chosen percentage
Travel time Adjusted miles divided by average speed

Latitude measures position north or south of the Equator. Longitude measures position east or west. The US National Ocean Service provides a clear official explanation of latitude and longitude.

Straight-line distance versus road distance

Roads rarely follow a direct line. Bridges, coastlines, terrain, restricted routes and the road network can make an actual journey longer. Use the adjustment only for early planning and confirm the route with a live navigation service before travelling.

After estimating mileage, calculate vehicle spending with the Car Running Cost Calculator UK. You can estimate a cab journey using the Taxi Fare Calculator UK or compare borrowing costs through the Car Finance Calculator UK.

Important: This tool does not use live roads, traffic, closures, ferries or public transport timetables. Its route and time figures are estimates.

Frequently asked questions

What is straight-line distance?

It is the shortest surface distance between two coordinate points, sometimes described as distance “as the crow flies”.

Does this calculator show driving distance?

Not exactly. The adjustment provides a rough estimate, but real driving distance requires a live route-planning service.

Where can I find coordinates?

Many digital maps show latitude and longitude when you select or right-click a location.

Why can the travel-time estimate differ?

Traffic, stops, speed limits, road types, weather and route changes all affect real travel time.

Can I calculate distances outside the UK?

Yes. Valid latitude and longitude coordinates work for locations worldwide.
