How the Tax-Free Childcare calculator works

For every £8 you pay into a childcare account, the government normally adds £2. That is a 20% contribution towards an eligible childcare bill. The top-up is capped for each child at £500 every three months, or £2,000 a year. For a disabled child, the cap is £1,000 every three months, or £4,000 a year.

This tool calculates each group separately so the higher disabled-child limit is not mixed with the standard allowance. It assumes the monthly cost entered applies to every child in that group.

Tax-Free Childcare limits

Child category Maximum every 3 months Maximum per year
Standard allowance £500 per child £2,000 per child
Disabled child allowance £1,000 per child £4,000 per child

Eligibility points to check

You will usually need to be working or returning to work, meet the earnings rules and use an approved childcare provider. Your child will generally need to be aged 11 or under, or 16 or under if disabled. You must reconfirm your details every three months.

Tax-Free Childcare cannot normally be received at the same time as Universal Credit childcare support. Compare your possible entitlement with our Universal Credit Calculator. For broader family planning, use the Pregnancy Due Date Calculator, or estimate education costs with the School Fees Calculator UK.

Important: This is an estimate, not an eligibility decision. Actual support depends on your circumstances, approved costs and the timing of payments into your childcare account.
