Microwave time conversion formula

Adjusted time = package time × package wattage ÷ your microwave wattage

A higher-powered microwave usually needs less time, while a lower-powered microwave usually needs more. This conversion assumes energy transfer changes in direct proportion to the rated wattage. Real appliances and foods can behave differently.

How to use the calculator

  1. Find the microwave wattage stated on the food packaging.
  2. Enter the package cooking time in minutes and seconds.
  3. Enter your microwave’s output wattage from its rating label or manual.
  4. Select a practical rounding interval and calculate.

Worked example

A meal gives 4 minutes 30 seconds at 800W, but the available microwave is 1000W. The original 270 seconds is multiplied by 800 ÷ 1000, giving 216 seconds, or 3 minutes 36 seconds.

Input Example
Package power 800W
Your microwave 1000W
Package time 4:30
Converted time 3:36

Food safety still comes first

A wattage conversion is only a starting estimate. Microwave heating can be uneven, and cold spots may remain. The Food Standards Agency advises following package and manufacturer guidance, stirring or turning food where directed, allowing standing time, and ensuring reheated food is steaming hot throughout. Read the official FSA home food-safety guidance.

Why results may vary

Shape, starting temperature, moisture, portion size, container, turntable position and power cycling can all affect the real cooking time. Do not use the wattage formula to replace temperature checks or special instructions for raw meat, poultry, eggs, infant food or medically sensitive diets.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I find my microwave wattage?

Check the appliance rating label, door frame, rear panel or user manual. Use output power rather than electrical input power where both are shown.

Why does a higher wattage reduce cooking time?

A higher output delivers energy faster, so the proportional conversion produces a shorter estimated time.

Should I include standing time?

No. Convert the active cooking time, then add the full standing time stated on the packaging separately.

Can I use this for defrosting?

Only as a rough comparison. Defrost programmes cycle power differently, so the appliance and packaging instructions should take priority.

Does doubling the portion mean doubling the time?

Not always. Larger quantities can heat unevenly, so use package guidance for the actual quantity rather than assuming a simple multiplier.
