Sleep Calculator

Sleep Calculator

Estimate sleep duration from bedtime and wake time after allowing for time taken to fall asleep and awake periods overnight.

e.g. 23:00 for 11:00 pm.
e.g. 07:30 for 7:30 am.
Enter 0 if you want to use the full time in bed.
Estimate the total time awake after first falling asleep.
Use a target appropriate for you.

How to use the Sleep Calculator

Enter your bedtime and wake time, then estimate how many minutes it takes to fall asleep and how long you are awake during the night. Add a personal sleep target to compare with the calculated duration.

How sleep duration is calculated

Result Calculation
Time in bed Wake time − bedtime, crossing midnight when needed
Estimated sleep Time in bed − sleep latency − awake time
Sleep efficiency estimate Estimated sleep ÷ time in bed × 100
Target difference Estimated sleep − entered target

How much sleep do adults need?

The NHS says most healthy adults need around 7 to 9 hours of sleep per night, although the exact amount differs between people. Read the NHS sleep problems guidance for practical support and information about when to get help.

Time in bed is not always time asleep

A bedtime-to-wake-time calculation can overstate sleep if it takes time to fall asleep or if you wake during the night. This calculator subtracts both estimates, but a sleep diary kept over several nights may show patterns more clearly.

Why this calculator does not use fixed sleep cycles

Sleep cycles vary between people and across the night. A fixed cycle length cannot guarantee that a particular bedtime will make waking easier, so this tool focuses on measurable time in bed and estimated time asleep.

Important: regularly struggling to sleep, waking very early, severe daytime sleepiness, loud snoring or interrupted breathing can need professional assessment. A calculator cannot identify insomnia or sleep apnoea.

Frequently asked questions

Does the calculator handle sleep after midnight?

Yes. If wake time is earlier than bedtime, it treats the wake time as the following day.

Is time in bed the same as sleep duration?

Not always. The calculator subtracts the entered time taken to fall asleep and awake periods overnight.

Do all adults need exactly 8 hours?

No. Sleep needs vary; the NHS says most healthy adults need around 7 to 9 hours.

Does the result measure sleep quality?

No. It estimates duration only and cannot measure sleep stages, restfulness or medical sleep problems.

When should I get help for poor sleep?

Seek professional advice when sleep problems persist, affect daily life or involve symptoms such as interrupted breathing.
